Before Periodontal Evaluation
Before any treatment you will be required to come in for a consultation to determine what type of treatment is necessary for your individual needs. You will generally be referred to us by your general dentist. He will provide you with a referral slip and any x-rays taken in his office that are pertinent to your case. We will carefully evaluate your case and make a diagnosis and recommend a treatment plan.
There are a few forms that you must complete prior to your initial visit. We will require a health history and HIPAA form to be read, completed and signed before seeing you. These forms can be found at “online forms” on this website. There are no specific instructions prior to your consultation:
- You may eat prior to your visit
- Continue taking your prescribed medications
- Bring a list of medications that your are currently taking
- Inform us if you are taking blood thinners
- Pre-medicate as prescribed by your physician if you have a heart murmur, artificial heart valve, artificial joints placed within the last 2 years as recommended
- Bring your referral slip and x-rays
- Bring your insurance card and information
Pre-Surgical Instructions
We recommend that you eat a good meal before your appointment, whether that be breakfast or lunch. Because we administer only local anesthesia, you will not have a restricted diet in preparation for surgery. If you are taking medication for anxiety, please take as instructed and make plans for someone to drive you to and from your appointment. If you are taking a blood thinner you will need to stop taking them seven days before your surgery appointment.

1. SURGICAL DRESSING The material placed over the wound is a surgical dressing. Hopefully it will stay in place; however, if it comes loose or particles break off and there is discomfort, please call our office. If it becomes loose and/or falls off and you are comfortable, just keep your next scheduled appointment.
2. BLEEDING Expect some minor oozing the day of the surgery. Put nothing warm or hot in the mouth the day of the surgery. If oozing persists, place a moistened guaze or a tea bag over the area and apply pressure for 30 minutes. If oozing still continues, please call.
3. SWELLING Apply an ice bag to the area of surgery for 10 minutes on and 5 minutes off the day of the surgery, to control swelling. Some swelling frequently occurs and possibly some bruising.
4. DIET Don’t eat anything until the anesthetic has worn off. Then a soft diet, high in protein, is recommended. Avoid spicy foods and alcoholic beverages. It is important to eat adequately to aid healing.
5. ORAL HYGIENE Clean your teeth normally except where the dressing is placed. You can rinse gently with diluted mouth wash to refresh the mouth. The day after surgery, start to rinse with warm salt water (1/4 teaspoon salt to 4 oz. of warm water) 2-3 times a day for one week.
6. MEDICATIONS & PAIN CONTROL Take prescribed medications as directed. Take pain medication before the anesthetic has worn off. Rinse many times with cool water the day of surgery. This will help control pain. If antibiotics are prescribed, it will be important to take them as directed until they are all taken.
7. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY You may follow regular daily activities, but avoid excessive exertion.
8. PLEASE CONTACT OUR OFFICE IF: a. Excessive bleeding occurs. b. Severe pain is present. c. Excessive swelling occurs. d. If you have any other questions.
